Socket and switch height: how many cm?

The first question when drawing the electrics: how high above the floor should sockets (outlets) and switches be? The specification used in Turkey, the common European standard and the rules on distance from water in bathrooms.

Is there a rule?

Turkey’s rules on indoor electrical installations do not set a fixed height for sockets and switches. In practice, the most referenced source is the general technical specification for electrical installations in public buildings by Turkey’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change: switches go 110 cm above the floor, sockets normally at 40 cm and wall lights at 190 cm. Germany’s DIN 18015-3 defines installation zones and gives 30 and 105 cm as the preferred heights.

Wall elevation: switch 105–110 cm, socket 30–40 cm, wall light 190 cm. In the kitchen, worktop 85–95 cm, worktop socket about 115 cm, and the underside of the wall cabinet at least 45 cm above the worktop.

Heights are usually measured from the finished floor to the centre of the box. Keeping the same height throughout a home matters: when all the switches are at the same level, you can find them even in the dark.

Electrical zones in the bathroom

In the bathroom, the position of sockets and lighting depends on the distance from water. The HD 60364-7-701 standard, widely used in Europe, divides the bathroom into zones:

Electrical zones in the bathroom: bathtub elevation and plan of a trayless showerBathroom with a tub · elevationZone 0Zone 1Zone 2Outside the zones225 cm60 cmLevel-access shower · planZone 1120 cmZone 2+ 60 cmShower head in the corner
Zone 0 is the inside of the bath or shower tray; zone 1 is above it up to 2.25 m (for a trayless shower, 1.20 m from the shower head); zone 2 extends 60 cm beyond zone 1.

Only devices with a suitable protection rating may be used in these zones; ordinary sockets stay outside them. The standard requires 30 mA residual current protection for bathroom circuits. In your own home, leave the installation to a licensed electrician or engineer.

Electrics in Nodaform

In Nodaform’s MEP layer (Plus and higher) you place socket, switch and lighting symbols on the plan. Sockets default to 30 cm and switches to 110 cm; you can change the mounting height of each symbol. On the Pro plan, the distance between sockets and water in wet areas is also checked, and you get a services sheet.

Add the electrics to your planPlace sockets and switches on your plan and set their mounting height.

The plans and dimensions in this post are layout ideas. A building permit, structural design or construction project requires a design by, and approval from, a licensed architect and engineer; ask your municipality about the details of the regulations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How high should a socket (outlet) be above the floor?

Turkey’s ministry specification for electrical installations gives 40 cm; the preferred height in DIN 18015-3 is 30 cm. Use the same height throughout the home.

What height should light switches be?

110 cm in Turkey’s ministry specification, 105 cm in DIN 18015-3.

How high should kitchen worktop sockets be?

DIN 18015-3 gives about 115 cm for sockets above the worktop; that sits between the worktop and the wall cabinets.

Can you put a socket in a bathroom?

Yes, but in a zone away from water and with suitable protection. HD 60364-7-701 divides the area around the bath and shower into zones; leave the installation to a licensed electrician.
