Example: a 67 m² net shop
- Sales area 5.80 × 8.40 m, 48.7 m².
- Storage 3.40 × 3.20 m, 10.9 m²; opens off the sales area.
- WC 2.20 × 3.20 m, 7.0 m².
Retail store layout tips
- Checkout near the entrance. Customers coming in and going out are in view; leave room behind the counter for the cashier to stand. In the example, the checkout is 1.20 m from the shop window.
- Wide aisles. In the example, the aisle between the wall shelves and the central islands is wider than 2 m; a shopping cart or stroller turns easily.
- Don't block the shop window. Keep the space behind the glass for low displays.
- Put storage at the back. Deliveries don't cut across the customers' path.
Permits and construction
The documents required to open a business and get an operating licence vary by municipality and type of business. This plan is a layout draft; have an architect prepare the drawings needed for an official application.
The plans and dimensions in this post are layout ideas. A building permit, structural design or construction project requires a design by, and approval from, a licensed architect and engineer; ask your municipality about the details of the regulations.
